A word search with the difficulty turned up: every grid hides exactly one animal, somewhere in four hundred letters, running in any of eight directions. More than fifty of them. Built with a puzzle generator we wrote ourselves, which is the only reason a book like this was possible.

One word. One grid. Twenty by twenty letters and nowhere obvious to look.
This was the first puzzle book, and it was a test of something else: a puzzle generator built from scratch to see whether the idea would hold up.
It held up better than expected. Finding one word in a twenty-by-twenty grid turns out to be a different problem from finding twenty. There is no list to work through and no easy foothold, so you end up reading the grid rather than scanning it.
The generator is on its fifth version now. This book is what version one produced.
